Vascular closure devices for femoral arterial puncture site haemostasis.
CONCLUSIONS: For time to haemostasis, studies comparing collagen-based VCDs and extrinsic compression were too heterogeneous to be combined. However, both metal clip-based and suture-based VCDs were associated with reduced time to haemostasis when compared with extrinsic compression. For time to mobilisation, studies comparing VCDs with extrinsic compression were too heterogeneous to be combined. No difference was demonstrated in the incidence of vascular injury or mortality when VCDs were compared with extrinsic compression. No difference was demonstrated in the efficacy or safety of VCDs with different mechanisms of acti...

Through-knee versus above-knee amputation for vascular and non-vascular major lower limb amputations
CONCLUSIONS: No RCTs have been conducted to determine comparative clinical or rehabilitation outcomes of through-knee amputation and above-knee amputation, or complication rates. It is unknown whether either of these approaches offers improved outcomes for patients. RCTs are needed to guide practice and to ensure the best outcomes for this patient group.PMID:34904714 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013839.pub2

Use of allografts in vascular surgery infections
Orv Hetil. 2023 Aug 13;164(32):1256-1262. doi: 10.1556/650.2023.32830. Print 2023 Aug 13.ABSTRACTWith the growing number of patients with vascular endografts, the number of patients with graft infections has also increased. Septic conditions and the choice of grafts are an important challenge in vascular surgery. The aim of this study was to review the literature of the last 7 years showing allograft use in septic conditions in vascular surgery which helps provide insight into the current results of vascular allografts. Data were collected between 1st January 2016 and 31st December 2022. A systematic search was conducted f...

Omega-3 fatty acids for dialysis vascular access outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease.
CONCLUSIONS: In CKD patients with an AVF, there is moderate certainty that ω-3FA supplementation makes little or no difference to preventing patency loss; and in patients with an AVG, it is very uncertain that ω-3FA supplementation prevents patency loss within 12 months. Perioperative statin therapy for improving outcomes during and after noncardiac vascular surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence was insufficient to allow review authors to conclude that statin use resulted in either a reduction or an increase in any of the outcomes examined. The existing body of evidence leaves questions about the benefits of perioperative use of statins for vascular surgery unanswered. Widespread use of statins in the target population means that it may now be difficult for researchers to undertake the large RCTs needed to demonstrate any effect on the incidence of postoperative cardiovascular events. However, participant-reported outcomes have been neglected and warrant further study. PMID: 23824754 [Pu...

Galantamine for vascular cognitive impairment.
CONCLUSIONS: Limited data were available when considering the impact of galantamine on vascular dementia or vascular cognitive impairment. The data available suggest some advantage over placebo in the areas of cognition and global clinical state. In both included trials galantamine produced higher rates of gastrointestinal side-effects. More studies are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. PMID: 23862185 [PubMed - in process]
